Things to Do in Nathia Gali: Hikes, Landmarks, and Activities Worth Your Time

From hiking Miranjani and Mukshpuri to exploring colonial landmarks, wildlife, and adventure activities, here are the experiences that are actually worth your time in Nathia Gali.
Nathia Gali is two hours from Islamabad and sits at 7,906 feet. It is a proper mountain town, not a tourist strip, and the range of things to do here is wider than most people expect from a Pakistani hill station. You have serious hiking trails, colonial-era landmarks, wildlife, a national park next door, and enough adventure activities on-site at modern resorts that a rainy day does not need to be wasted.
This covers the activities that are actually worth your time, with enough detail to plan each one properly.
The Three Hikes You Should Know About
Nathia Gali's hiking trails are the main reason people visit, and three routes come up time and again for good reason. They suit different fitness levels and give different experiences, so knowing which one fits your trip saves you from either under- or over-committing.
Miranjani Trek: The One With the Best Views
Miranjani is the highest point in Galyat at 9,160 feet (2,792 metres). The trail starts from near the Governor's House in Nathia Gali and takes two to three hours to the summit at a moderate pace. The route goes through dense pine and fir forest for most of the ascent, so it does not feel exposed until you break above the treeline near the top. When you get there, the views across the Jhelum Valley and toward Azad Kashmir are the kind that make the climb feel entirely justified.
The trail is moderate rather than easy: there are uneven sections with roots and loose rock, and the elevation gain is real. Good hiking boots make a meaningful difference here. Start early, before 9am if you can, to reach the summit before afternoon cloud cover rolls in. A KPK Forest Department permit may be required from the Nathia Gali Forest Office; check when you arrive.
Pipeline Track: The Family-Friendly Forest Walk
The Pipeline Track runs four kilometres from Dunga Gali to Ayubia along a flat, shaded forest path. It follows the route of a British-era water pipeline and is wide, well-maintained, and almost entirely level. If you are travelling with children, visiting with older family members, or just want a long, peaceful walk without significant exertion, this is your trail.
It is one of the better wildlife corridors in the area. Himalayan langur monkeys are regularly spotted in the canopy above the path. The bird life is consistently active, especially in the morning. The track ends at Ayubia, from where you can take the chairlift or arrange a vehicle back. Allow about an hour and a half at a comfortable pace, and slightly more if you stop to watch the monkeys.
Mukshpuri Top: The Open Summit
Mukshpuri sits at around 9,232 feet and is reached via a two-to two-and-a-half-hour hike from Dunga Gali. The trail gains real elevation in the upper section, but the payoff is a wide-open summit plateau with 360-degree views across the Galyat range. On a clear October or November day, the visibility from the top is exceptional.
Mukshpuri feels different from Miranjani because the summit is an open meadow rather than a forested ridgeline, which gives it a more dramatic, exposed quality. It is the more photogenic of the two peaks for wide-angle landscape shots. The trail is popular enough that you are rarely completely alone, which reassures solo hikers.
General hiking note: wear ankle-supporting boots on all three trails, carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, and hike in the morning during monsoon season (July to September) to get down before afternoon rain makes the paths slippery.
Ayubia National Park
Ayubia National Park covers the four hill stations of Ayubia, Khanspur, Changla Gali, and Dunga Gali. The park itself is a dense pine and oak forest managed by the KPK Forest Department, and it has documented populations of leopards, Himalayan black bears, yellow-throated martens, and rhesus macaques. You are unlikely to see the larger predators on a standard day walk, but the smaller wildlife, birds in particular, are consistently visible.
The park's chairlift between Ayubia and Dunga Gali operates seasonally, which makes for an easy aerial view of the forest canopy without any hiking effort. Check whether it is running before you plan your day around it; maintenance closures are not unusual outside peak summer. The picnic areas at Khanspur are the most developed in the region and work well as a base for a full family day out.
The Colonial-Era Landmarks
Nathia Gali has a layer of British colonial history that most visitors walk past without registering. Knowing what you are looking at makes the town considerably more interesting.
St. Matthew's Church
St. Matthew's Church is one of the most photographed buildings in the Galyat belt, and for good reason. It was built in the late 19th century from local stone, and it sits in a small, neat compound with valley views behind it. The building is structurally intact and still in active use. In winter, under fresh snowfall, it looks extraordinary. Worth a half-hour visit regardless of season.
The Governor's House
The Governor's House was the traditional summer residence of the Governor of what was then the North-West Frontier Province. The estate is extensive and not open for public tours, but the grounds are the trailhead for Miranjani, so you pass through the entrance area if you are hiking. The colonial architecture visible from the road gives a clear sense of how the area was developed during the British period.
Nathia Gali Bazaar
The bazaar along the main road is Nathia Gali's commercial centre: a compact strip of shops selling local honey, dried fruits, mountain herbs, handicrafts, and seasonal produce. The dhabas here are worth stopping at for karahi or a cup of chai. Roasted corn from street stalls is the signature snack and costs almost nothing. This is where you pick up provisions before a hike and where you buy the local Galyat honey, which is genuinely good quality and makes a worthwhile gift.
Adventure Activities You Can Do Without Leaving the Resort
For days when the weather is not cooperating or when you want variety beyond hiking, Serene Heights has a full range of on-site activities including zipline, archery, air gun shooting range, rock climbing wall, and mini golf. These are available within the resort grounds, which means you are not dependent on trail conditions or transport to access them.
Horse riding is available informally near the bazaar and along the Pipeline Track approach. Rates are negotiated directly with the handlers and vary by season. Jeep rides into the surrounding forest tracks can be arranged from local operators near the bazaar for groups who want to cover ground that is not accessible on foot.

See Resort ActivitiesStargazing at 7,906 Feet
This one surprises people. At nearly 8,000 feet with minimal light pollution compared to Islamabad or Lahore, Nathia Gali has genuinely good conditions for stargazing from October through February. The Milky Way is visible on clear moonless nights in this window. Serene Heights has a refractor telescope on-site, which is an unusual amenity at a mountain resort and makes stargazing accessible to people who have never done it before.
The summer and monsoon months are largely useless for this. Cloud cover from June through September means clear nights are rare. If stargazing is something you want to do, plan around October to February and check the moon calendar before you book your specific dates.
Wellness and Slower Days
Not every day in Nathia Gali needs to be a hike. The wellness facilities at Serene Heights include a steam room and sauna, a jacuzzi, massage rooms, a gym, and unlimited natural spring water. The Italian central heating and heated floors make the resort comfortable through winter in a way that a standard guesthouse is not. On snowfall days or heavy rain afternoons, this is a genuinely different quality of experience from sitting in a cold room waiting for the weather to change.
The indoor sports room covers table tennis, snooker, and video games, which works well for families with children who run out of outdoor energy. The rooftop restaurant operates year-round with valley views that are dramatically different depending on the season: green and lush in July, amber-toned in October, snow-covered in January.
Day Trips Worth Making
Khanspur
Khanspur is three kilometres from Nathia Gali and noticeably quieter. The forest is denser here, and the picnic areas are well-maintained. The KPK Forest Department rest house at Khanspur is a colonial-era building that can be booked for overnight stays through the department. It is an easy add-on to a Nathia Gali itinerary for anyone who wants to see more of the Galyat range without a long drive.
Dungagali
Dungagali is five kilometres away and serves as a trailhead for several less-used hiking routes. It is less commercialised than Nathia Gali and is worth a half-day visit if you want to explore the forest outside the main tourist corridor. Quieter on weekends and almost empty midweek outside summer.
Abbottabad
Abbottabad is the closest town with a full range of amenities: restaurants, ATMs, medical facilities, fuel stations, and larger supermarkets. Most visitors pass through it on the way up, and it is the practical base for stocking up on anything you forgot to bring. The city has its own character worth exploring beyond the logistics: the Kakul Military Academy area and the Sardar Begum Road food strip are worth an hour if you are spending time there.
Food in Nathia Gali: What Is Actually Worth Eating
The bazaar dhabas are where the best food is. Karahi, cooked fresh in a wok over high heat, is the meal to order: lamb karahi especially, with naan from the tandoor next door. Local Galyat trout appears on some restaurant menus and is worth ordering when available. It is not always fresh, so ask before you order.
Roasted corn on the cob from the street stalls along the main road is the non-negotiable snack. It costs almost nothing, and the smoky flavour from the coal grill is specific to this kind of roadside setting.
Galyat honey is sold in the bazaar by a handful of local beekeepers. The wildflower varieties from the higher-altitude hives are the best quality. If you are staying at Serene Heights, the rooftop restaurant handles full dining throughout your stay, which is particularly useful in winter when the bazaar options thin out.
What to Bring
- Hiking boots with ankle support: trainers are not adequate for Miranjani or Mukshpuri. Do not learn this the hard way halfway up.
- Layers: evenings drop sharply at any time of year. Even a warm August day in Nathia Gali gets jacket-cold after sunset.
- Rain gear: if you are visiting between July and September, a waterproof jacket is essential for afternoon hikes.
- Cash: There are limited ATMs in Nathia Gali. Withdraw from Abbottabad before ascending.
- Water and snacks: water is available at the resort, but not reliably on the trails. Carry 1.5 litres minimum per person for any hike.
- Sunscreen: the UV exposure at 7,906 feet is meaningfully higher than at sea level, even on overcast days.
Common Questions
How difficult is the Miranjani Trek?
It is a moderate hike: manageable for fit beginners but not a casual stroll. The ascent takes two to three hours with real elevation gain and some uneven terrain near the top. Wear proper boots and carry water. Most people who go to average fitness find it within reach.
Can you see Miranjani and Mukshpuri in one day?
Technically yes, but it makes for an exhausting day. Both trails originate in the same area but doing both back to back means six-plus hours of hiking with significant elevation. Most people pick one and pair it with the Pipeline Track as a gentler second activity on the same or following day.
Is Nathia Gali good for a two-night trip?
Two nights is the minimum for a meaningful trip. One full day covers either the major trails or the national park and historic sites. Two full days lets you do both without feeling rushed. Three nights is better for spring and autumn visits when the conditions make you want to stay out longer.
Are there any activities for children in Nathia Gali?
The Pipeline Track is genuinely family-friendly and suitable for children who can walk four kilometres. Ayubia National Park's picnic areas work well for families. At Serene Heights, the resort activities, including mini golf, the indoor games room, and zipline, keep children occupied without requiring a hike.
Is it possible to invest in property in Nathia Gali?
Yes. Serene Heights offers a Smart Property Unit investment structure starting from PKR 2,000,000 for a 50 sqft co-ownership share in a hotel apartment. Owners receive quarterly rental income from the hotel's revenue pool and two complimentary nights per year. It is designed for investors who visit Nathia Gali frequently and want to convert their accommodation spend into an asset.
