How to Spend 48 Hours in Nathia Gali: Realistic Weekend Itinerary

A realistic 48-hour Nathia Gali itinerary with actual timings, named spots, and contingency plans for rain. Not a generic list — a schedule you can follow directly.
Most Nathia Gali itineraries are lists. They tell you to visit the Pipeline Track, Miranjani, Ayubia National Park, and Mukshpuri, ideally in the same weekend, without acknowledging that Miranjani alone is a full-day hike and you cannot do all four things in two days without turning a holiday into a schedule.
This itinerary is different. It is structured around what a 48-hour visit can actually contain without rushing, it accounts for the altitude adjustment that affects your first day, it names specific places rather than generic categories; and it includes a rain contingency because this is Nathia Gali in summer and rain is a real possibility.
It is built for people arriving Friday evening or Saturday morning and returning Sunday. If you have a specific different configuration, the logic here can be rearranged, but the core principle holds: do the gentler thing on day one and the demanding thing on day two.
Before planning the drive up, read the Islamabad to Nathia Gali travel guide — the road timing advice there is directly relevant to whether your Saturday starts well or in a traffic jam.
Day 1: Arrival, Orientation, and One Good Walk
Driving Up: 7 am or Earlier from Islamabad
Leave Islamabad by 7 am at the absolute latest if you are arriving on a Saturday. The Kashmir Highway is clear before 7 am even on a peak summer Saturday. By 9am it starts building. By noon it is unpleasant. The Murree Expressway section is the worst—past Murree, the road thins and traffic actually reduces, but getting through Murree quickly is the goal.
Stop at Abbottabad for breakfast. The drive from Islamabad to Abbottabad on the Hazara Motorway is 140 kilometres and comfortable. From Abbottabad to Nathia Gali is 43 kilometres on a mountain road — allow 75 minutes in good traffic, 2 hours if there is any volume on the road.
Target arrival in Nathia Gali: 10 am to 11 am.
11am: Check In and Do Nothing for an Hour
This is the part no one puts in a travel guide because it sounds like bad advice. It is actually the most important hour of the trip. You have just arrived at 7,906 feet from somewhere significantly lower. Your body needs to adjust. The headache and elevated heart rate that some first-time visitors experience on Nathia Gali days are almost always worse when people go straight from the car to physical activity.
Unpack. Drink water. Sit on the terrace if there is one. Walk around the guesthouse or resort grounds at a gentle pace. Give yourself the hour.
12pm – 2pm: The Nathia Gali Bazaar Walk
After the acclimatisation hour, walk to the bazaar. It is 300 metres long so you will not get lost. The walk from most accommodation to the bazaar is a pleasant 10 to 20 minutes through pine-shaded roads depending on where you are staying.
In the bazaar: have lunch at one of the dhabas on the left side of the main strip. Order the karahi if they have it fresh — ask if they are making it now or reheating. The fresh preparation is significantly better. Roasted corn from the street stalls outside the bazaar is the correct afternoon snack.
Spend an hour here. Walk the full length of the bazaar twice. Buy local honey if you see a reputable vendor — Galyat honey is genuinely different from what you buy in the city. Then walk back.
3pm – 5pm: The First 1.5km of the Pipeline Track
Drive to Dunga Gali (4 kilometres south of Nathia Gali, 10 minutes). Park at the Pipeline Track trailhead. Pay the small entry fee. Walk into the forest.
You do not need to do the full 4 kilometres today. The first 1.5 kilometres of the Pipeline Track into the forest is the most beautiful section. The dense pine canopy closes over the path, the temperature drops 3 to 4 degrees from the road, and the sound of the highway disappears within 5 minutes of starting. Walk 1.5 kilometres in, spend 30 minutes in the forest, walk back.
This serves two purposes: you get a genuine forest experience on your first afternoon, and you save the full 4-kilometre Pipeline Track walk for tomorrow when you will enjoy it more having slept a night at altitude.
5:30pm – 7pm: Changla Gali Viewpoint
Drive back toward Nathia Gali and continue north on the main road for 6 kilometres to Changla Gali. The road here offers some of the clearest valley views in the Galyat region, particularly in the late-afternoon light when the day's haze has lifted. You can stop at several points along the road — there is no formal 'viewpoint' with a car park, just wide spots on the road where the valley view opens up.
Spend 30 to 45 minutes here. Watch the light change on the valley. If the timing works, this is a genuinely excellent place to be at dusk.
7:30pm – 9pm: Evening
Return to your accommodation. Dinner on-site if you are in a resort, or at one of the Nathia Gali bazaar dhabas if you are in a guesthouse. Eat earlier rather than later — at altitude after physical activity, heavy food at 10pm does not help you sleep well.
If the night is clear, spend 20 minutes outside with the lights off looking at the sky. The star visibility at 7,906 feet on a clear night is remarkable if you have spent most of your life in a Pakistani city.
Sleep. Day two is the hike.
Day 2: Mukshpuri, the Full Pipeline Track, and the Drive Back
7am: Start Mukshpuri Early
Breakfast first, but keep it light. You are going to 9,232 feet today.
Drive to the Mukshpuri trailhead near Shangrila Hotel in Nathia Gali town. The trailhead is not always well-signposted — ask anyone at your accommodation for the current starting point, as it has shifted slightly with recent trail access changes. Start walking by 7:30 am at the latest.
The first kilometre of the Mukshpuri trail passes through the Lalazar Park area — there is a small park here with good forest and sometimes orchids in spring. After the Lalazar junction, the trail climbs more consistently. The elevation gain is 400 metres over 4 kilometres. This is a real hike. Take your time, stop frequently, and drink water consistently.
At the summit: the view on a clear day covers the entire Galyat belt, the Kashmir Valley, and on exceptional October days, the distant Himalayan peaks. Allow 45 minutes to an hour at the summit before descending.
Estimated total time for Mukshpuri: 3 to 3.5 hours return including summit time. Return to your accommodation by noon.
12pm – 1pm: Rest
Eat. Rest. Mukshpuri is a real physical effort and if you are checking out today, this is also the time to pack. Do not try to cram another activity here.
1pm – 3pm: The Full Pipeline Track
Drive to Dunga Gali again. Today, do the full 4-kilometre one-way Pipeline Track from Dunga Gali to Ayubia.
Take your time. The kilometre 2 to 3 section, where the forest opens to valley views on the south side, is the most photographically interesting section. The colonial-era Motto Tunnel a kilometre before Ayubia is worth slowing down for.
Arrive at Ayubia. Have coffee at Gloria Jeans on the terrace. This is not optional. A proper flat white or chai at the end of a mountain walk with a valley view below you is one of the better experiences this area offers.
Take a local Suzuki van or taxi back to Dunga Gali (10 minutes, a few hundred rupees). Collect your car.
3:30pm – 4pm: Begin the Return
Leave no later than 4pm to avoid the Sunday afternoon traffic building from Abbottabad toward Islamabad. The traffic on Sundays builds from 3pm and is most severe between 4pm and 8pm. A 3:30pm departure from Nathia Gali puts you on the Hazara Expressway around 5:30 pm, which is manageable.
Rain Contingency: What to Do When the Plan Falls Apart
July and August bring afternoon rain with enough regularity that planning around it matters. If you wake up on day two to rain, do not try to force the Mukshpuri hike. Wet trails above the tree line are genuinely slippery and the views from the summit will be cloudy. Rearrange.
Rain day alternative morning: St. Matthew's Church in Nathia Gali is worth visiting in any weather — the colonial-era stone building in pine forest fog is as atmospheric as the mountain on a clear day. The Governor House area, for its exterior and the old British hill station architecture, is good for a slow wet-weather walk.
Rain day alternative afternoon: If you are in a resort with indoor facilities, use them. If the rain clears by 2pm (which it often does), the post-rain forest is exceptional — clean air, the smell of pine and wet earth, and significantly fewer people on the trails than a dry afternoon.
Do not cancel Mukshpuri because the morning looked uncertain. Check the weather at 7am and make the call then. Clear mornings at Nathia Gali altitude frequently stay clear until early afternoon.
The Questions People Ask Before a 48-Hour Nathia Gali Trip
Can I do Miranjani in 48 hours instead of Mukshpuri?
Technically yes, but I would not recommend it for a first visit. Miranjani is a 5 to 7 hour day return from the Governor House trailhead. That is your entire day two, and you will have no energy for the Pipeline Track. Save Miranjani for a 3 or 4-day trip when it can be the centrepiece of a full day with nothing else planned around it.
Is 48 hours enough to see Nathia Gali properly?
Enough to understand why people keep coming back — yes. Enough to see everything the area offers — no. The Pipeline Track, Mukshpuri, the bazaar, and the viewpoints are what 48 hours realistically accommodates. Miranjani, Ayubia National Park beyond the Pipeline Track end point, and Dunga Gali village are left for a longer trip. This is not a problem. It is a reason to come back.
Should we go on a Friday or Saturday?
Friday is significantly better for accommodation availability and traffic management. Arriving Thursday evening or Friday morning means your Saturday (day two of activity) is the quieter day on the trails. Arriving Saturday morning means you are competing with everyone else for trail space and bazaar seating on both days. If your schedule allows it, the Friday arrival is worth it.
